Whitcomb Panthers R.O.A.R.!
Whitcomb Panthers R.O.A.R. is a proactive approach, using a schoolwide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) framework, aimed to create a positive school culture. Based on our Mission and Vision, we established R.O.A.R. The goal is to increase our school's ability to establish the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students to be emotionally, socially, and academically successful.
Whitcomb School Mission
The Whitcomb School challenges, inspires, and empowers adolescents to make responsible decisions, and develop knowledge, skills and understanding required to discover and develop their potential.
Whitcomb School Vision
The Whitcomb School community promotes a respectful and safe environment that fosters the growth of the middle level child. With the core values of integrity, respect, trust, and responsibility at the heart of all we are and do, students engage in academic experiences designed to explore and master essential curriculum competencies, and social opportunities, intended to promote global awareness and civic responsibility. With a strong foundation fashioned at the Whitcomb School, students will continue their journey for success.
During the 2014-2015 school year, Whitcomb School focused on establishing Tier I for all students. As a staff, we determined common expectations for communal areas including in the hallways, in the auditorium, in the cafeterias, and during morning and afternoon dismissal. Staff taught, modeled, and practiced with students the common expectations throughout the school year using schoolwide lesson plans.
Staff began implementing common responses to problem behaviors to support students in demonstrating appropriate behaviors. Whitcomb continues to believe in the importance of teaching and reteaching schoolwide and classroom expectations as well as taking a problem-solving approach to support students.
The Whitcomb Panthers R.O.A.R. Team consists of staff members from all grade levels and all departments including Unified Arts, World Languages, Support Staff, Paraeducators, and Administrators.
Our BOOST Team was established in April 2015 and consists of staff members from all grade levels and all departments including Unified Arts, World Languages, Support Staff, Paraeducators, and Administrators. BOOST is Whitcomb's Tier II support that will be offered for students who need more intervention assistance to succeed at Whitcomb. Through a nomination form and evaluation of other data, students are selected to receive strategies to aid their success in meeting R.O.A.R. expectations. Interventions include P.A.W.S. (Positive Academic Work Skills) and InstaBoost (a daily check in/check out system).
P.A.W.S., or Positive Academic Work Skills, is a Whitcomb-designed intervention aimed to build students’ planning, organization, and self-advocacy skills.
P.A.W.S. was originally launched as an intervention during the 2015-2016 school year as a Tier II support for students identified by their teachers as needing additional supports with organization. For the 2016-2017 school year, P.A.W.S. was redesigned to be implemented as Tier I instruction for all sixth-grade Whitcomb students. P.A.W.S. will provide a common experience for students around organization and help to build the foundational skills they need.
Over the course of the first two months of school, students received weekly lessons during Enrichment block focused around planning, organization, and self-advocacy. Students will learn the skills that they need in order to come to class prepared and to develop the strategies necessary to be successful in sixth grade. Lesson topics include locker organization, time management, identification of learning style, and academic goal setting.
The InstaBoost Program is a Tier II intervention for students at risk of behavioral difficulties. Students referred for this program typically need a “Boost” or support following Whitcomb’s four core values: Respectful, Opportunities, Academics, and Responsible.
Students who participate in this program meet with a “coach” daily and receive support through their coach during morning and afternoon homerooms. Throughout the day, students are rated by their classroom teachers on a R.O.A.R. Card about their classroom behaviors. Teachers provide specific feedback about students’ classroom behaviors briefly at the end of each period. This feedback is specific and intended to help the student make behavioral progress.
Students, coaches, and teachers are able to come together and create goals to work on throughout the 6 to 8 week intervention. This program allows Whitcomb to monitor students’ behavioral progress, as well as communicating more frequently with students’ parents or guardians. Most importantly, this program is designed to create positive connections among teachers, coaches, parents, and students.
