• English Language Proficiency (ELP) Levels

     

    WIDA Levels / Explanation

     

    6 - Reaching

    Language performance meets all the criteria for level 5.

    Exit the program: Will be monitored by ELL Program for 4 years.

     

    5 - Bridging

    • Complex sentences.

    • Organized, cohesive, and coherent expression of ideas.

    • Technical and abstract content-area language.

    Up to 2 periods week of ELD Instruction, or exit the program.

     

    4 - Expanding

    • Some complex sentences.

    • A variety of grammatical structures.

    • Specific and some technical content-area language.

    Up to 1 period week of ELD Instruction.

     

    3 - Developing

    • Demonstrate a range in mid-level English proficiency.

    • Have not yet developed academic proficiency in English.

    Up to 1 period/day of ELD instruction.

     

    2 - Emerging

    • Phrases or short sentences.

    • Emerging expression of ideas.

    2-3 periods/day of ELD instruction.

     

    1 - Entering

    • Words, phrases, or chunks of language

    • Single words used to represent ideas.

    2-3 periods/day of ELD instruction.
