    Bullying Prevention Curriculum

On Feb. 6, 2014, the Middlesex Partnerships for Youth gave a presentation entitled “Cyber Safety From A Forensic Perspective - Sexting, Texting & Child Predators.”  Resources from that presentation have been posted below.

In the fall of 2011, the Marlborough Public School administrative team formed a review committee to choose a DESE-approved, evidence-based bullying prevention curriculum for students in grades preK-12. Members were selected by district principals and included representatives from the health and wellness departments, school counselors, elementary educators, and local business and nonprofit stakeholders.

The review committee chose the evidence-based Bully Proofing curriculum for students in grades preK-12.  The committee chose to supplement the Bully Proofing lessons with lessons from the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center (MARC), also evidence-based, focusing on cyber-bullying.

In the spring of 2012, the scope and sequence committee integrated the Bully Proofing lessons and the MARC lessons into one bullying prevention program for prekindergarten through grade 12, calling it, MC3; Marlborough; Creating a Caring Community.

MC3 reflects the community’s commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens, as well as an overall cultural change the schools want to effect within the community. MC3 seeks to build a caring school community, where all citizens know the common vocabulary and expectations for healthy, safe behavior. Citizens also can identify and access prevention and intervention resources available to them, beginning in our schools.

In summer 2012, further development of the program focused on training educators and parents. Workshop training was delivered to all counselors, administrators and health and wellness educators. Presentations were created for delivery to all other educators, parents and support staff, and materials were ordered from Bully Proofing and MARC cyber-bullying lessons. MPS also received a Safe & Drug-Free Schools state grant to fund additional training and book purchasing for all of our high school teachers.

In September, 2012, the Pilot MC3 Program started for students K-12 in the health and wellness classes. Throughout the year, students will be introduced to the concept of “Creating a Caring Community” through activities and lessons enhanced by teachers and administration.
