Cancellation, delayed opening, and/or early dismissal information
Whenever inclement weather is forecasted, Marlborough Public Schools communicates directly with the Marlborough Police Department and the Marlborough Department of Public Works and obtains information on the conditions of the roads in the city.
Be assured that safety is central to all decisions affecting students, and that none of these three city departments ever knows exactly how the weather will turn out at the time the decision about school is made.
In the event that school schedules must be changed because of inclement weather or safety conditions, all attempts will be made to notify school families by telephone/e-mail via SchoolMessenger prior to 6 a.m. Additionally, any closings, delays or early dismissals due to inclement weather will be posted on the homepage of this website, www.mps-edu.org, on the district's social media outlets (Facebook and Twitter) and shared with local media outlets as soon as possible after the decision is made.
The following radio and television stations also will be used to provide this notification:
WTAG 580 AM Radio Worcester
WSRS 960 FM Radio Worcester
WBZ 1030 AM Radio Boston
WRKO 680 AM Radio Boston
WBZ Television Boston Channel 4
WCVB Televison Boston Channel 5
WHDH Television Boston Channel 7
Please note: If you log on to any of these stations’ websites, make sure that you check to see when the information was last updated. If you see contradictory information, it may be due to the station’s inability to keep up with all the cancellations, thus not updating their information as quickly as necessary. We recommend you check the district website - www.mps-edu.org - for more up-to-date information whenever possible. Posted changes become "live" within minutes. Additionally, updated information will be posted on the district's Facebook page.
On the weekends, the Marlborough Public Schools uses these same venues to cancel school-related events. Limited messaging options on some television channels may result in a message that indicates there is no school on Saturday or Sunday. Each television channel decides how long such Sunday cancellations will run before switching to cancellation notices for Monday. In circumstances that involve weekend storms, make sure you check on Monday morning. Again, we will make every attempt to post these changes promptly on our district website home page and Facebook page as well.
Should inclement weather conditions warrant the cancellation of school, the above-noted venues will carry this notification.
Parents are encouraged to monitor broadcast stations or the district website/Facebook page in the event that a proposed delay may, in fact, become a cancellation as a weather system moves through our area. This is particularly true of afternoon preschool classes, where a decision to cancel the afternoon session would coincide with an early dismissal for all other students.
In the event that weather conditions warrant the cancellation of the pre-school afternoon sessions, the decision to cancel will be made at 10 a.m. Notification will be made via the above-listed venues. Parents should be aware of the possibility of cancellation.
Radio and TV will list school cancellations as Marlborough or Marlborough Public Schools and not an individual school names.
In the event that a delay in the opening of school is necessary, the school district also will use SchoolMessenger, the district website/Facebook page, and the venues listed above to announce the delay. If a delay occurs:
- Morning preschool classes will be canceled.
- All-day preschool will start at 11 a.m.
- Afternoon preschool classes will begin at the normal time.
- For all other students, starting time for school will be adjusted according to the length of the expected delay.
- Dismissal times will remain the same as a regular school day.
- For specific Early Childhood Center schedules, see the ECC Web page.
Important: If a delayed opening is announced, please continue to stay tuned to your radio or television - or be sure to refresh your computer screen often if you are checking the district website or Facebook page - in the event that school is eventually canceled.
Early dismissal requires extensive coordination between parents and school. If weather conditions and safety issues warrant early dismissal, notification will be made over the radio and television stations listed above and by SchoolMessenger. We ask that parents take precautions and make plans to arrange for children to have a key to the house or to stay at a neighbor’s home should the parents work or in the event that a parent cannot get home when schools must be dismissed early. Early dismissal times for inclement weather and other urgent situations are:
- 12:00 Noon - Marlborough High School
- 1:00 p.m. - Whitcomb Middle School (grades 5-8)
- 2:00 p.m. - Jaworek, Kane and Richer elementary schools (grades K-4)
For specific Early Childhood Center schedules, see the ECC Web page.
SPECIAL EDUCATION TRANSPORTATION would be delayed or canceled in the same manner as that for other students unless the student is individually notified of another adjustment.
Finally, although it is necessary that a procedure for emergency conditions exists, we encourage each parent to take responsibility to ensure the safety of his or her own child. School district decisions will be based on the welfare and safety of all children in the school system. However, should a unique circumstance exist regarding the safety of your child, we ask that you make that decision as your responsibility as a parent. If you, as the parent or guardian, believe that your child should stay home due to inclement weather conditions in your own neighborhood, please exercise your prerogative to keep your child at home.
