Sixth Graders become paleontologists

Sixth graders making fossils 1

Through a hands-on activity, sixth graders in Eliza Giroux's science class got to practice being a paleontologist by making  fossils as part of a unit on the Geologic Time Scale. These students made Cast and Mold fossils to understand the changes in the earths environments’ over time.  They had to create a cast and mold fossil of a living organism (plastic toy) and write about what they learned about their fossil explaining what type of environment their organism came from. To support their understanding of the organisms living environment, students used prior knowledge of their organism as well as a quick computer search to provide three pieces of evidence and reasoning.
