 HIGH SCHOOL PROMOTION/GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

In order to graduate or receive a district-determined “CD” (competency determination), Marlborough High School Students must meet the below requirements:

1. MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Competency Determination (CD)

In order to graduate, a student must complete the district-determined CD “competency determination”, as specified by DESE. The CD shall be based on the academic standards and curriculum frameworks for tenth graders in the areas of mathematics, science and technology, history and social science, foreign languages or approved alternative course and English. Participation in the Massachusetts Competency Assessment System (MCAS) is mandatory for all eligible students.

The Building Administrator has the discretion to approve alternative academic pathways through programs approved by the School Committee.

2. Yearly Course Load and Promotion Requirements

In order to graduate, a student must accumulate a minimum of ninety-six (96) credits during grades 9-12, must carry & pass the minimum number of credits per year as noted below and must meet Program of Studies requirements as outlined, regarding CORE subjects and electives.

Students must carry a minimum amount of 24 credits per year.

3. Credit and Course Distribution Requirements

In order to graduate, a student must accumulate a minimum of 96 credits during grades 9-12. Within these totals, a certain number of units must be taken, and a passing grade must be attained. A full year course provides four (4) credits. A half-year course provides two (2) credits.

  • English: 16 credits

  • Mathematics (must include successful

    completion of Algebra 2 or equivalent

    coursework): 16 credits

  • Lab-based Science & Technology/Engineering: 12 credits

  • History & Social Sciences: 12 credits

  • World & Classical Languages (Two years cumulative of same language): 8 credits

  • Fine Arts: 4 credits

  • Wellness/Physical Education: 8 credits (one course per year or equivalent coursework)
