April vacation was a time to relax and recharge, and for some students, it was an opportunity to reengage in their learning at our Attendance Academy.

At the academy, students rotated through four teachers. They participated in interactive activities designed to build skills for the remainder of their high school careers and beyond, while earning credit for four days of attendance. Activities included researching and participating in a debate of their choice, practicing public speaking, playing financial literacy bingo and creating an attendance and wellness action plan.

We are incredibly proud of the Marlborough High School Robotics Team X^2, consisting of seniors Atul Modur, Anderson Lopez Castillo, Edgar Xante Gomez, junior Maggie Morrissey and coach Kyle Mager. They competed in the VEX Robotics World Championships held from April 20-24 in St. Louis, MO. This season, over 25,000 teams participated in 3,300 tournaments across more than 50 countries, leading up to this event, with only the top 860 teams qualifying to compete at the World Championships.

Team X^2 entered the competition as significant underdogs, operating on a shoestring budget. They faced off against many private schools and organizations that had dozens of corporate sponsors, six-figure budgets and paid coaching staff.

Throughout the first three days of qualification matches, they held their ground and overcame numerous challenges, achieving an impressive 8-5-1 record and earning additional points for their autonomous wins. As a result, they secured a spot in the single-elimination round on the final day, placing in the top 32 teams of their division.

Ranked 20th, they selected an alliance partner from Mexico, another underdog team, with whom they had developed a bond during the previous matches and through previous online interactions. Together, they entered the competition as the 14th seed, facing the 3rd seed, a team from China and their alliance partner from Pennsylvania. In a thrilling match marked by outstanding teamwork and last-second heroics, they achieved a remarkable upset, advancing past this powerhouse alliance.

Their journey continued into the quarterfinals, where their Cinderella story came to a close in a very close match against two teams from California.

There is so much pride to take in for these students and their coach. This experience was truly world-class, providing them with invaluable confidence and lessons in technical skills, teamwork and culture that will serve them well in all their future endeavors. Go Panthers!

In April, district leadership and members of the Marlborough High School administration visited the cafeteria to congratulate the dining services team for achieving an impressive 80% lunch participation rate in October 2025. They have consistently maintained at least 80% participation since then, thanks to their commitment to creative cooking and engaging activities.

Students from our Learning in Functional Environments Program, which is designed for individuals ages 18-22 with disabilities who have not received a regular high school diploma, visited the Northboro Nutrition Hub on Friday to learn about making healthy choices. This experience is part of their hands-on learning in independent living and social communication. During the visit, students had the opportunity to order and enjoy a shake or a healthy refresher.

On April 9, our Family Community Liaisons held the 5th Annual Title I and Title III Family Wellness Fair, featuring over a dozen local vendors and community partners. The event focused on enhancing the mental, emotional, physical and financial health and well-being of our students and families.

Attendees enjoyed complimentary food and had a chance to win fantastic prizes through raffle entries.

Our annual K–12 Citywide Art Show is a vibrant celebration of creativity, showcasing a diverse array of styles, techniques and materials, highlighting the growth and ingenuity of our young artists. On Thursday, we hosted this year's event, where we witnessed the pride our students took in their work, reflected in the smiling faces of their family members.

Transitioning to a new school can be challenging for students and families. On Wednesday, Whitcomb Middle School hosted its Fly Up Night for fifth graders and their families to help ease the transition.

This event allowed families to learn about the school’s unique school-within-a-school model, academics and extracurriculars. Attendees explored the building, met dedicated staff, then had a chance to mingle and enjoy a cookout.

The evening concluded with an informational meeting about the new Advanced Learning Pathways Program for grades 5-9, offering insights into upcoming opportunities for students.

From reading and science to math and social studies, the MCAS testing season offers our students an opportunity to demonstrate their growth and achievement.

The MCAS testing windows will remain open until early June, and we are proud of the hard work our students and educators have put into preparing for these important assessments. A special shoutout goes to Richer School, which has held various fun, whole-school events to help motivate students to do well on their tests.

In March, Richer students in grades 3-5 participated in a series of Growth Walks. During these events, they paraded down the halls carrying decorated posters showcasing their academic growth, while their fellow students cheered them on. Additionally, the Richer School rolled out the red carpet for students at a high-energy pep rally on Monday, sharing valuable test-taking strategies and practical tips, including the importance of getting a good night's sleep and carefully answering each question.

Good luck to all of our students! We believe in you and are cheering you on every step of the way.

On March 26, current juniors and their families were welcomed to an engaging information night focused on the EMT program for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year.

Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the unique structure of this hybrid senior-year option, which blends classroom learning with hands-on experience. They were introduced to the talented staff from Marlborough High School and PrideStar Ambulance, who are committed to guiding program participants through their educational journey. Our juniors and their families also had the chance to hear inspiring stories from this year's program participants, who recently began their internship rotations in the public safety sector, gaining valuable real-world experience. The evening concluded in the EMT classroom, where current EMT program students proudly demonstrated the impressive practical skills they have developed throughout the year.

Thank you to our staff for organizing this event, which gives our juniors insight into one of their many senior-year options when they #ChooseMHS.

In March, our OneGoal junior cohort and a group of students from the Accelerated Learning Academy/METAS participated in a field trip to Worcester.

Their first stop was Assumption University, where the students attended an information session followed by a campus tour and lunch in the dining hall. During lunch, they spontaneously met Hunter Correia, a Marlborough High School Class of 2025 graduate, who shared his experiences at the university and highlighted the incredible support available to Assumption students.

Next, the group visited Quinsigamond Community College, where they toured the campus and met with the Office of Transfer and Articulation Services. This meeting provided valuable insights into the benefits and applicability of both Early College and community college credits. Additionally, the OneGoal students who are currently enrolled in a First-Year Experience course at QCC received their photo IDs during the visit, allowing them to take advantage of college student discounts.

We are grateful to our MHS guidance counselors and the entire staff who planned and chaperoned these events, allowing our students to explore their post-graduation options.

In the latest episode of PantherCast, Class of 2026 President Atul Modur speaks with Class of 2024 alum Risha Khanderia, who shares her journey with the Special Olympics, a commitment that began over 10 years ago at Marlborough Public Schools. Risha’s experiences and the unwavering support she received as an MPS student have fueled her passion for volunteering with this incredible organization.

As Risha prepares to run the Boston Marathon in April, she aims to raise $10,000 for the Special Olympics of Massachusetts, giving back to the community that has played such a crucial role in her development.

On Wednesday, Superintendent Jason DeFalco and Marlborough High School Principal Stephen Sierpina were honored to witness two exemplary MHS Seniors, Atul Modur and Shayla Ramon, being recognized at the Worcester County Superintendent's Association Annual Scholars Lunch for 2026 for their academic and extracurricular achievements.

Atul was selected for this award for his exceptional contributions in and out of the classroom. He serves as the Student Advisory Committee representative and Class President. As a member of the MHS Robotics team, he led them to qualify for the VEX Robotics World Championship for the first time. He co-founded the MHS NSTEM Honor Society, where he is currently Vice President. Additionally, Atul has been a varsity track runner for three years, competing in the 1600m and 3200m events, and he interned at Practera, working with the CEO on tests for Large Language Models.

Shayla has been recognized for her community involvement and academic dedication. She has won numerous awards for her leadership and academic excellence, including the Dartmouth Book Award and the Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony Award. At just 15 years old, she was the youngest graduate of a two-year leadership course at her church, where she received the “Rookie” award for her exceptional leadership among 100 adult team leads. In addition to her academic achievements, Shayla is also proud of her physical capabilities. She can lift her body weight in core-strength lifts, including the squat, bench press and deadlift.

When students #ChooseMHS, they gain direct access to local businesses and industry professionals, allowing the city to serve as an extension of the classroom.

On March 5, over 40 juniors and seniors from Marlborough High School attended the School to Business Expo at Solomon Pond Mall, organized by the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation. The day began with a hands-on networking workshop and continued with panel discussions featuring leaders from various sectors. These discussions provided insights into their fields, industry trends and career opportunities. One of our own MPS guidance counselors participated as a panel facilitator, supporting this valuable event. The day concluded with students coming together to network and enjoy lunch from local eateries in the food court.
